Online before the taxi queue

Ngurah Rai (DPS) is a busy airport, and the arrivals hall is where most people try to sort out a SIM — next to everyone else from the same flight. With an eSIM there is nothing to sort out.

Before the trip: buy a plan and scan the QR code at home, on Wi-Fi. It takes about a minute.
On landing: switch mobile data to the travel eSIM and turn data roaming on for that line.
Your own number stays active for calls and SMS codes from your bank. WhatsApp keeps your usual number.

Where the signal is strong — and where it fades

The south is covered densely: Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu, Sanur, Jimbaran and Uluwatu all have solid 4G, and 5G in the busiest spots. Ubud town is well covered too.

It thins out where the island gets wild: the rice terraces and ridges north of Ubud, the road up to Mount Batur, the jungle waterfalls around Munduk, and the quieter coast of the east and north. Expect a bar or two rather than nothing — enough for maps and messages, not always for video calls.

Canggu & Seminyak

Beach clubs, cafés and co-working spaces. The densest coverage on the island — and the most crowded networks at sunset, when everyone posts at once.

Ubud

Reliable in town and along the main roads. On the terraces and in the river valleys the signal comes and goes, so download the route before a walk.

Uluwatu & the Bukit

Good on the clifftops and around the surf breaks. Down on the beaches under the cliffs, the rock itself blocks the signal — it returns as you climb back up.

Nusa Penida & the Gilis

The boat crossing drops out mid-channel. The harbour villages are covered; the famous viewpoints on Penida's west coast are patchy. The plan keeps working — these islands are Indonesia too.

Working from Bali

Café Wi-Fi in Canggu and Ubud is usually fine until the afternoon rush or a power cut. A data plan with hotspot is the backup that saves a call: tether the laptop and carry on. If you are staying a month, take a larger bundle or an unlimited plan rather than topping up every few days.

Nyepi: the day Bali goes offline

Once a year, on Nyepi — the Balinese Day of Silence, usually in March — the whole island stops for 24 hours: the airport closes, nobody goes outside, and mobile internet is switched off across Bali by every operator. No plan, local or travel, works that day. Hotel Wi-Fi usually stays on. If your dates include Nyepi, download what you need the evening before.

Download offline maps

Before heading to the terraces, waterfalls or Nusa Penida, save the area in Google Maps or Maps.me. Navigation then works with the weakest signal — or none.

Will my phone work with an eSIM in Bali?

It needs two things: eSIM support and no carrier lock. iPhones from the XS and XR onwards, Google Pixel 3 and later, and most recent Samsung Galaxy S, Z and A-series phones have eSIM. Check the list of compatible phones if you are not sure.

Should I install the eSIM before I fly or after I land?

Before. Installing needs an internet connection, and home Wi-Fi is more dependable than the airport's. Check on the plan's page when its days start counting: for some plans it is the first connection to a network in Indonesia, for others the moment of installation — those are better installed shortly before departure.

Does the plan work on Nusa Penida, Lombok and the Gili Islands?

Yes. Every plan on this page covers the whole of Indonesia, so it keeps working on the neighbouring islands, in Java, Komodo or anywhere else in the country. Coverage on small islands is thinner than in southern Bali.

Can I order a Grab or Gojek with a travel eSIM?

Yes — the apps only need data. If an app asks for a phone number, use your usual one: the verification SMS arrives on your home line, which stays active next to the eSIM.

Do I get an Indonesian phone number?

No. These are data-only plans. Calls and messages go through WhatsApp, Telegram, FaceTime or any other app, and your own number keeps working for ordinary calls and SMS.

What if I run out of data?

Buy another plan in a minute from the site or the app — it installs next to the first one. Plans that support top-ups can be extended without installing anything new; the plan's page says which ones do.
